Cold rolled steel slitting is a manufacturing process by which raw materials, such as various types of steel, are cut and fed through a slitting machine. Cold rolled steel is then processed in cold reduction mills where the material is cooled, followed by annealing and/or tempers rolling.

At Consolidated Metal Service Inc., experienced operators feed the master coil onto the uncoiler where it is unraveled and sent down the slitting line into the coil slitting machine. Next, the sheet metal is cut into narrow strips by sharpened rotary knives and the strips are re-coiled by the recoiler into a new metal coil that fits predetermined specified measurements.

Cold rolled steel slit coil is commonly used in:

Hot Rolled Steel vs Cold Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel is steel that has been rolled at high temperatures, while cold rolled steel is essentially hot rolled steel that is further processed in cold reduction materials. Here, the material is cooled followed by annealing and/or tempers rolling.

When hot rolled steel cools to room temperature it allows the stainless steel to take on a much more polished surface finish. This additional processing is followed by annealing or tempered rolling to minimize internal stresses and get rid of most surface imperfections. Hot rolled steel also has higher corrosion and heat tolerances. On the other hand, cold rolled steel generally has a more smooth surface that allows it to be used as-is in production operations.

Types of Cold Rolled Steel

From our 1008 sheet metal used for automobiles and home appliances, to a more heat resistant 4140 steel used in oil and gas industries, we carry a wide variety of cold rolled steel types to fill multiple needs. Having the proper steel materials is essential to creating a finished product of the highest quality.
