Here at Consolidated Metal Service, Inc., we have been associated with custom slitting, edging, toll processing and distribution of different ferrous and non-ferrous metals since 1982. Hot rolled steel is one of many metals Consolidated Metal can slit and edge to create products our economy depends on.

Hot rolled steel is formed when metal is higher than its recrystallization temperature. This type of metal is mainly used in the welding and construction industries. It can bend into 25 different forms including: the hot rolled steel round bar, square bar, flat bar, square mechanical tubing, tread plate and welded pipe. The shapes are formed when steel is heated at a particular temperature and turns to plastic. Hot rolled steel is usually a blue-grey color with a scaly finish and round corners. This metal cannot be chemically colored unless the base metal is exposed through grinding. Once the base metal is exposed, the metal can be colored with pigmented lacquers or be painted on the surface. It is also a preferred metal by many industries because it is cheaper than cold rolled steel.

Types of Hot Rolled Steel

There are six types of hot rolled steel: AISI 1010, 1020, 1018, Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel, Hot Rolled Bar Stock and A36. The AISI 1010 is a low carbon alloy that is used in the auto industry, wiring, storage bins, shopping carts and jewelry. The 1020 Hot Rolled Steel is a plain carbon steel that creates combinations for manufacturing opportunities. The 1018 Hot Rolled Steel is unique because of its hardening qualities and machining characteristics. This steel is used for parts with high surface hardness and a soft core like ratchets, anchor pins, special bolts and gears. The Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel remove scaly finishes from surfaces. The Hot Rolled Bar Stock prevents rust with a bluish-gray oxide scale coating. The last type of hot rolled steel, the A36, is known for welding, drilling, sawing and machine properties. It can also form many shapes.

We have been a leader in customizing metal for many years, and if you need hot rolled steel, we’re the perfect company to contact.
