Precision-slit electro-galvanized steel coils ready for shipping at Consolidated Metal Service

Electro-Galvanized Steel Coil & Sheet Products

We stock and source electro-galvanized steel coil and sheet in a range of gauges and widths to meet the needs of manufacturers across industries.

Whether you need a full-width coil, a precision-slit strip, or a cut sheet, we can process it to your specs.

Electro-galvanized steel is available in light gauges commonly used for stamped parts, fasteners, and appliance components. We slit to widths as narrow as .250 inches and as wide as 48 inches. If we don’t have exactly what you need in inventory, we’ll source it.

Our vendor network spans 40-plus years of industry relationships, so if you’re looking for a specific coating weight, substrate grade, or tight-tolerance electro-galvanized product, we can find it. Contact our team and tell us what you need.

Electro-Galvanized Steel Processing Services

Electro-Galvanized Steel Slitting Services

We precision-slit electro-galvanized coils to your custom widths, maintaining tight tolerances and protecting the zinc coating throughout the process.

We offer multiple edge finishing options designed to meet your application’s requirements for safety, fit, and downstream processing.

Benefits of Electro-Galvanized Steel Coil & Sheet

  • Consistent, uniform coating: The electroplating process deposits zinc evenly across the surface, producing tighter coating weight tolerances than hot-dip galvanizing.
  • Smooth surface finish: Electro-galvanized steel has a cleaner, brighter appearance than hot-dip alternatives, making it ideal for painted or cosmetic applications.
  • Excellent paintability and adhesion: The smooth zinc surface bonds well with primers, coatings, and adhesives, making it a preferred choice for parts that will be painted or finished.
  • Good corrosion protection for interior applications: Provides reliable rust resistance in controlled environments for appliances, automotive interiors, HVAC components, and similar uses.
  • Formability: Electro-galvanized steel maintains good ductility, so it shapes, stamps, and forms cleanly without coating flaking.
  • Weldability: Performs well in welding applications compared to heavier hot-dip coatings, with better control over spatter and weld quality.
  • Lighter coating options available: Lower coating weights are available for applications where weldability, formability, or cost efficiency are priorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is electro-galvanized steel, and how is it different from hot-dip galvanized?

Electro-galvanized steel is coated with zinc through an electroplating process that deposits a thin, uniform layer directly onto the steel surface. Hot-dip galvanizing submerges steel in molten zinc, producing a heavier, spangly coating better suited for outdoor structural applications. Electro-galvanized is preferred when you need a smooth, paintable surface, tighter coating tolerances, or better formability.

What coating weights are available for electro-galvanized steel coil?

Electro-galvanized steel is typically available in coating weights from EG10/10 through EG60/60, with EG30/30 and EG40/40 being the most common for general manufacturing applications. Lighter weights are often chosen for parts requiring welding or forming, while heavier weights offer added corrosion protection. Tell us your application requirements, and we’ll help you identify the right coating weight.

Does CMS offer toll processing for electro-galvanized steel?

Yes. If you have your own electro-galvanized coil that needs to be slit, edge-conditioned, or processed to spec, we’ll handle it as toll work. We process customer-owned material of any quantity and can accommodate just-in-time scheduling and warehouse storage as needed.

What edge finishes are available for electro-galvanized steel coil?

Sharp edges on slit metal coil can be a problem downstream for the people handling the material, the equipment processing it, and the end product itself. Our edge conditioning removes the slitting burr and smooths the edge to the finish you specify. We offer three types: #5 deburred (basic burr removal), #4 modified round (a partial round for general handling safety), and #1 full round (a fully rounded edge for applications where end users will be in direct contact with the material). Edge conditioning is available for gauges from .015 to .125 inches and widths from .500 to 3.750 inches.

What industries commonly use electro-galvanized steel coil and sheet?

Electro-galvanized steel is used across a wide range of manufacturing industries: appliance manufacturing (inner cabinet panels, door liners, brackets), automotive (interior body panels, seat components, fasteners), HVAC (ductwork, enclosures), construction (framing connectors, fasteners, interior trim), electronics (enclosures, chassis), and general metal stamping and fabrication. If your application calls for a clean zinc surface that forms and paints well, electro-galvanized is often the right answer.

How does CMS protect electro-galvanized steel from surface damage during processing?

The zinc coating on electro-galvanized steel can scuff or scratch if it’s not handled properly. Our climate-controlled indoor facility and full crane access mean the material is never left exposed to moisture or rough handling. We take care at every step, from receiving and slitting to packaging, to ensure coil and sheet arrive the way they should.

What are CMS's turnaround times for electro-galvanized steel orders?

In-stock electro-galvanized items are typically ready to ship in 1–5 working days. If your timeline is tighter, ask about rush service to meet urgent needs. For sourced materials, lead times vary by grade and coating weight.
