Edge conditioning or “edging” is a brute force process that rolls the edge of metal coils to a desired shape soon to be used for various tasks and purposes. Edging more importantly removes burrs (sharp edges left on finished materials) in order to make the metal’s edges smooth and safe for exposed applications. This smooth edge is primarily accomplished by skiving, milling, or material redistribution using edge rolling.  Each edge conditioning technique has its advantages and disadvantages but all reach the same end result.

Types of Edge Conditioning

There are typically 3 – 5 edge types available to clients interested in edge conditioning. Some of which are:

  • Full Round Edge (# 1 edge)
  • Natural Mill Edge (# 2 edge)
  • Slit Edge (# 3 edge)
  • Round Edge (# 4 edge)
  • Deburred Edge (# 5 edge)

The most popular edges are the Full Round Edge, the Round Edge, and the Deburred Edge.

The Full Round Edge is a full radius edge applied by forcing a bar between edging dies at tremendous pressure. The edge not only becomes very smooth and safe to handle but becomes significantly more attractive in appearance.

The Round Edge is excellent for exposed parts and for materials that must be handled safely. The edging process removes the burr and establishes radial corners on the material.

The Deburred Edge is great for materials that must be handled safely. The edging process removes the slitting burr and finishes the edge of the material.

In fact, some companies offer other unique forms of edges aside from the standard edges typically available.

In one instance, Consolidated Metals Service, Inc. provides Specialty Edges upon request along with the standard edges usually available. Consolidated Metals also offers edge conditioning for various types of metals such as Stainless Steel edging, Low Carbon Steel edging, Brass edging, Aluminum edging, and more.  The variety of metals and techniques Consolidated Metals offers has made them one of the most experience and trusted companies in edge conditioning.

The unique and powerful process of edge conditioning can offer thousands of quality products and applications useful to both consumers and businesses alike.  For those looking for a reliable means of creating a variety of safe metal products, edge conditioning may just be the answer you’re looking for.
